Earlier in the year we had the privilege of being commissioned by Loram Rail to produce a gauge 1 display model of the brand new RGX rail grinder. This is the first completely UK designed and manufactured grinding vehicle in their inventory.
It was an expansive project, starting with a scaled production ready CAD model from full size data supplied by LoramUK. Working along side technical representatives from the company, details were honed prior to approval to manufacture.
The art was designing thin walled sections and scale details with tolerance for 3D printing, white metal casting and painting.
Large components were printed by our good friends at Drumlord Ltd with smaller parts and assemblies in house on the venerable Formlabs Form 2.
A particular challenge was to produce the rather snazzy livery in particular around louvres and external features.
The finished model was displayed on the Loram trade stand at IAF 2025 in Munster to much approval.
A very satisfying once in a generation project to be involved with.
Special thanks must be given to Ryan Judge and Jim Reid from Loram UK for assistance, technical knowledge and above all else enthusiasm.
